Best Suit, the fourth album from Vancouverite Jason Zumpano (still encrypted as The Cyrillic Typewriter) is his most conceptually coherent to date. A sonic evocation of the dis-ease of psychological unrest and competing personalities, as intimated in Jason McLean’s luminously weird album art, Best Suit charts a progression of mental alienation in a series of instrumental suites, or “Suits”, abrupt sound portals processed by Loscil’s Scott Morgan, that disrupt the album in three phases. Like the flickering of an electric light in a Lynch film, these signals infer the interstitial moments of cinema – the rolling credits, the quick cuts between scenes, the creepy pause at the closed door leading to a forbidden basement.
Tension between droning synthetic intonements and organic voices that enter and exit collude to describe a consciousness at odds with itself and its inputs, moving between fear, unrest and bright apertures of euphoria. Zumpano’s notable pop discography (Zumpano, Destroyer, Sparrow) feels lifetimes away from this utterly unsettling excursion into the unbalanced signal- to-noise ratio of a mind in trouble. Each copy comes with an 8.5 X 11 24pt matte card stock insert
